Guess what. It’s time to take another trip through a book of the Bible. I’ve been thinking and praying about which book would be next, and I have landed on 1 Corinthians. It was going to be Romans or 1 Corinthians, both of which I love and have taught through before. Maybe Romans will be next, Lord willing.
Why 1 Corinthians? I can’t say that there’s enormous neglect of this letter as I had observed for Hebrews. I hear teachers, preachers, and Christians all over the place quote (and misquote) passages from 1 Corinthians, but seldom have I heard the letter taught through in a verse-by-verse manner.
Also, the church in Corinth was planted within a community with competing ideas about spirituality, gods, and culture. Being squarely within the area known now as Greece, the dominant influence of Graeco-Roman culture defined Corinth. I find that somewhat similar to our experience today. We are planted within a culture that is in direct opposition to us.
These are just some of the things that drew me to 1 Corinthians.
The letter addresses issues that arose in the church after Paul planted it and departed. Because of that, the subject changes frequently, which makes it difficult to identify a consistent theme.
This study will begin after Thanksgiving and before Christmas, so look for the official launch within that window. I’m currently thinking through how to format things. If I go that direction, I’m considering something video-driven and what it’ll require to make it a quality production. But at a minimum, there will be article content like the content in the Hebrews study.
I’m also working on a title, which has been harder than I thought it’d be.
If you have any questions or comments, please get in touch with me or leave a comment below. I’m excited to start this, and I think it will be a fantastic journey.
This is one of my favorite passages in times of despair and limbo. Verse 17 is so encouraging. God told…
